Q: How can I tell if the web page I am on is secure?
A: Web pages have two indicators that they are secure:

  • A padlock icon at the bottom of the browser window (you can click the padlock to verify the identity of the site to which you are connected).
  • A web address that starts with "https" instead of "http"

These indicators assure you that the page -- and your information -- is protected. You will always see both when you log in to the Account Center. If you do not see both of these indicators on the log in page of the Account Center, do not log in to the site and close your browser immediately. To make sure that you are always logging into the Hooters Card website, we suggest that you bookmark our home page or log in page and use it to access the site.

Q: How can I keep my password safe?
A: Never share your password with another person. Keeping your password secret is your way to keep your information secure. If you think someone might have gotten access to or guessed your password, you should change it immediately.

Q: What should I use for my password?
A: It is very important to choose a good password. Your password should be easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to guess, avoid using easily guessed passwords such as a birth date, Social Security number or pet's name. Instead, choose a word or phrase and mix numbers in with it. Also, you shouldn't use the same password for all your accounts. Mix up your passwords when you register for different online services. You may have to work a little harder to remember your passwords, but it is much safer in the long run.

Q: What should I do when I am done in the Account Center?
A: As soon as you are ready to leave the Account Center, you should log out by clicking the "Account Center Log Out" link at the top of the page. You will receive a message confirming that you have successfully logged out. If you don't log out, you could be endangering the security of your personal information by potentially allowing others using the same computer to access information saved or cached in the memory of the browser. As an extra precaution, you are also advised to close your browser's window before you walk away from the computer.

Q: How can I tell that an e-mail I receive is really from Hooters Card?
A: E-mails reguarding Hooters MasterCard will come from HootersCard.com. E-mail fraud can be identified fairly easily. If you receive an e-mail that has an offer of free money, asks you for a user ID/Account number or password or in general sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We will not send you any e-mail that requests your Account information, offers you a prize or asks you to verify a statement. If you receive an e-mail that appears to be from HootersCard.com, but you suspect might be fraudulent, please call 1.800.850.HOOT (4668) immediately. A Customer Service Representative can verify whether or not the e-mail was actually sent by HootersCard.com. Messages that you receive from us in the Online Cardholder Center are always secure. Only you and the users on your Account with Online Cardholder Center access can view the contents of these messages.

Q: What is phishing?
A: Phishing (pronounced "fishing") refers to fraudulent communications designed to deceive customers into divulging personal, financial or account information. These scams come in different forms and are evolving regularly, such as e-mails that provide a link to a fraudulent site, inviting the recipient to enter personal information. In addition, several computer viruses have recently been used in an effort to silently capture information from infected machines. This underscores the importance of ensuring that your computer is fully patched, per the manufacturer's instructions.

Q: What does phishing look like?
A: The nature of phishing schemes has evolved and is likely to continue to do so in the future. Currently, online/e-mail phishing is best described by the following characteristics:

  • E-mails using company logos and familiar language reporting a problem and asking you to update your account information by prompt return e-mail or by filling out a website form.
  • HTML links in e-mails that may resemble those of a legitimate business and direct you to websites that use company logos or otherwise appear to be authentic.
  • E-mails with attachments asking you to install software so that fraudsters can use it to record your keystrokes and online activity.
  • E-mails that contain typographical or grammatical errors.
  • Windows that pop up over a legitimate company's website asking you to enter personal information.

Q: How does phishing work?
A: Phishing works by making an e-mail or web site appear to be legitimate, thereby providing potential victims with a false sense of security, while simultaneously creating a sense of urgency for immediate action to prevent cancellation of an account.

Q: How do I protect myself from phishing?
A: Consider whether the company would be likely to ask you for the kind of information being requested. Keep in mind; you do not need to give a company with which you have a business relationship your personal information. The company should maintain that information in their secured records. If you are at all in doubt about the authenticity of the communication, do not respond to the information request. Instead, contact the company through familiar communication channels (e.g., the phone number provided on your billing statement or credit card). Additionally you do the following to protect yourself:

  • Do not click on a link in an e-mail when you are not sure of its legitimacy, even if it looks genuine.
  • If you feel your Hooters MasterCard Account information has been compromised, please contact Hooters MasterCard immediately by calling the number on the back of your card.
  • Avoid e-mailing personal and financial information.
  • Never open e-mail attachments from unknown sources and delete the e-mail in question immediately.
  • Regularly review your Account statements.
  • Do not share IDs/user names and passwords.
  • Change your passwords regularly.
  • Install the latest anti-virus and firewall applications to your computer.
  • Follow your computer manufacturer's recommendations to ensure that your computer is current on its patches.
  • Refer to your computer's documentation or user's manual for further information.
